Summary

Interferon-alpha treatment for acute hepatitis C showed short-term improvements in liver enzymes but no long-term benefits. This hepatitis C treatment was safe, though, with no significant side effects observed in patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of interferon-alpha in treating acute posttransfusion hepatitis C.
  • To assess the safety and long-term outcomes of interferon-alpha therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial involving 28 patients with acute hepatitis C.
  • Interferon-alpha treatment group received 3 million units thrice weekly for 12 weeks.
  • Biochemical, histological, and serological parameters monitored over 1 year.
