We present a rare case of spinal melanoma with an unusual primary radicular location and early metastasis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings suggest melanocytic or hemorrhagic lesions, requiring histological confirmation for diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Spinal cord imaging
  • Melanoma research

Background:

  • Intraspinal primary melanoma is an exceptionally rare tumor.
  • Primary melanomas of the spine present unique diagnostic challenges.
  • Early detection and accurate diagnosis are crucial for patient outcomes.

Observation:

  • A case of spinal melanoma with an atypical primary radicular location is described.
  • The tumor exhibited early intradural and extra-medullary metastatic spread within six months.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed specific signal characteristics suggestive of melanocytic or hemorrhagic origin.

Findings:

  • T1-weighted MRI showed a hyper-intense lesion.
  • Intense contrast enhancement post-gadolinium administration was observed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • T2-weighted imaging demonstrated decreased signal intensity.
  • Implications:

    • MRI findings, while suggestive, are not pathognomonic for spinal melanoma.
    • Histological analysis remains essential for definitive diagnosis.
    • Understanding atypical presentations aids in improving diagnostic accuracy for rare spinal tumors.
