Hashimoto thyroiditis patients may develop sleep apnea syndrome, even without sleep complaints. This study found obstructive sleep apnea in 5 of 7 euthyroid Hashimoto thyroiditis patients.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Sleep Medicine
- Immunology
Background:
- Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune thyroid disease associated with other systemic conditions.
- The link between Hashimoto thyroiditis and sleep apnea syndrome requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of sleep apnea syndrome in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis.
- To determine if sleep-related breathing disorders are present in euthyroid Hashimoto thyroiditis patients.
Main Methods:
- Evaluated seven female patients diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis (based on antibody titers and histology).
- Assessed sleep apnea syndrome using full polysomnography (PSG).
- Compared findings with a control group of seven healthy subjects matched for age and sex.
Main Results:
- Five out of seven Hashimoto thyroiditis patients exhibited characteristics of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).
- Sleep apnea severity varied among affected patients (one severe, one moderate, three mild).
- No sleep breathing disturbances were detected in the healthy control group.
Conclusions:
- Sleep-related breathing problems, specifically obstructive sleep apnea, may be more common in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis.
- These sleep issues can occur even in euthyroid patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.
- Further research is warranted to understand the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications.
