Summary

We developed Dicom Search Engine (DicoSE), a web-based tool to visualize the complex data structure of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard. DicoSE enables querying the DICOM data dictionary and understanding data topology.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Health Informatics
  • Computer Science

Background:

  • The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard defines protocols for medical imaging devices.
  • DICOM is an elaborate standard, published in multiple parts by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).
  • Visualizing the complex data structure within DICOM datasets is challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement a web-based tool for visualizing the DICOM standard data structure.
  • To provide a user-friendly interface for querying the DICOM data dictionary.
  • To facilitate understanding of the inherent data topology within DICOM datasets.

Main Methods:

  • Developed the web-based Dicom Search Engine (DicoSE).
  • Implemented functionalities to query the DICOM standard data dictionary.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Integrated a web-based administration interface for data management.
  • Utilized entirely freely available software components.
  • Main Results:

    • DicoSE effectively visualizes the data structure defined in DICOM parts 3, 5, and 6.
    • The tool allows querying for defined data fields within the DICOM standard.
    • Users can visualize the inherent data topology of DICOM datasets.
    • A functional web-based administration interface was provided.

    Conclusions:

    • DicoSE offers a valuable solution for understanding and navigating the DICOM standard.
    • The tool simplifies the exploration of DICOM data structures and their relationships.
    • The use of freely available software makes DicoSE an accessible resource.
