Report cards and nursing homes.

Summary

Nineteen states now offer nursing home report cards online. However, the quality and usefulness of information on these report cards vary significantly, indicating a need for improvement in presentation and content.

To identify states producing nursing home report cards.
To compare the information content and data sources of these report cards.
To evaluate report card usefulness based on established factors and suggest improvements.

Web-based search of state agencies responsible for elder affairs and nursing homes.
Examination of information presented on identified nursing home report cards.

Nineteen states were found to have nursing home report cards.
Significant variation exists in the information presented and its usefulness across states.

Conclusions:

Nursing home report cards are a valuable tool for aiding facility selection by elders and families.
The current number of state initiatives is encouraging, but substantial improvements in presentation are needed.
Further development can enhance the utility of nursing home report cards.
