Summary

Ruminating worsens mood and problem-solving in depression. Distraction improves mood and problem-solving, especially for those not prone to rumination. Targeting rumination may be key for effective depression treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Background:

  • Rumination is linked to lower mood and impaired problem-solving in depression.
  • Distraction is hypothesized to improve mood and problem-solving abilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of rumination and distraction on mood and problem-solving in major depression.
  • To examine naturally occurring and experimentally induced rumination and distraction.

Main Methods:

  • 36 patients with major depression and 36 controls were randomly assigned to rumination or distraction conditions.
  • Trait rumination and distraction levels were measured, along with mood and problem-solving before and after interventions.

Main Results:

  • Higher trait rumination in depressed patients correlated with poorer mood and problem-solving.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Induced rumination worsened mood and problem-solving in depressed patients.
  • Distraction improved mood in all depressed patients and problem-solving in less ruminative individuals.
  • Conclusions:

    • Treatments for depression should target rumination and problem-solving deficits.
    • Further research is needed on the effects of self-applied versus induced distraction.
    • High trait rumination may hinder the effectiveness of experimental interventions.
