Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Oncology
  • Colorectal Cancer Research

Background:

  • Flat and depressed colorectal neoplasms are increasingly identified in Western populations.
  • These lesions present diagnostic challenges during colonoscopy.
  • Depressed colorectal lesions carry a significantly higher risk of adenocarcinoma compared to similar-sized protruding or flat lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review recent advances in understanding flat and depressed colorectal neoplasms.
  • To focus on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic strategies for these lesions.
  • To highlight the potential for these lesions to be missed during colonoscopy.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of English literature published from 2000 onwards.
  • Analysis of studies focusing on flat and depressed colorectal neoplasms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Emphasis on epidemiological data, diagnostic techniques, and treatment modalities.
  • Main Results:

    • Growing body of evidence confirms the existence and clinical significance of flat and depressed colorectal neoplasms.
    • Increased risk of malignancy associated with depressed morphology.
    • Potential for underdiagnosis due to their subtle endoscopic appearance.

    Conclusions:

    • Flat and depressed colorectal neoplasms require heightened awareness and improved detection methods.
    • Accurate diagnosis and timely intervention are critical for managing the elevated cancer risk.
    • Further research into optimal screening, diagnosis, and therapy is warranted.
