Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Context:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) is a global infectious disease impacting human and animal health and economies.
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the primary cause in humans, while Mycobacterium bovis is a significant zoonotic agent.
  • Despite control programs, TB is re-emerging due to antibiotic-resistant strains, HIV, wildlife reservoirs, and livestock persistence.

Purpose:

  • To highlight the re-emergence of tuberculosis globally.
  • To identify key factors contributing to the resurgence of TB.
  • To outline essential strategies for controlling this zoonotic disease.

Summary:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, affecting both humans and animals.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The re-emergence of TB is driven by antibiotic-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains, the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), persistent wildlife reservoirs, and ongoing infection in livestock, particularly in developing nations.
  • Mycobacterium bovis is identified as a critical zoonotic pathogen in TB's history.
  • Impact:

    • Effective control necessitates integrated approaches between human and animal health sectors.
    • Advancements in diagnostic techniques are crucial for early detection and management.
    • Development of novel and effective vaccines is essential for preventing TB transmission and reducing its global burden.
