Deindividuation00:57

Deindividuation

Deindividuation is a form of social influence on an individual’s behavior such that the individual engages in unusual or non-normal behavior while in a group setting. Why? Because in these group settings, the individual no longer sees themselves as an individual anymore, disinhibiting their behavior and personal restraint.
Basal Lamina are the Specialized Form of ECM01:03

Basal Lamina are the Specialized Form of ECM

The basal lamina is a thin extracellular layer that lies underneath the cells and separates them from other tissues. The three layers of the basal lamina are lamina lucida, lamina densa and lamina reticularis. The basal lamina, a mixture of glycoproteins and collagen, provides an attachment site for the epithelium, separating it from underlying connective tissue. The framework of basal lamina has other essential proteins such as laminins mesh, perlecan, entactin, and type IV collagen.

Cavity Drainage and Flashings in Masonry walls01:20

Cavity Drainage and Flashings in Masonry walls

Typically, a cavity wall consists of two wythes separated by a gap of at least 2 inches, which may contain insulation while still maintaining a minimum clear space of 1 inch to facilitate adequate drainage. Advanced methods like the insertion of a continuous drainage mat can further reduce this space while ensuring effective moisture expulsion.
Weep holes, strategically placed at the base of the cavity, are critical for draining accumulated water. These openings are created by leaving head...
Efflorescence in Masonry01:25

Efflorescence in Masonry

Efflorescence in masonry walls appears as a fluffy crystalline powder, often white, resulting from water-soluble salts within the masonry or mortar. When water penetrates the masonry, it dissolves these salts and brings them to the surface, where they are deposited upon evaporation of water.
While initial efflorescence is common post-construction and can be cleaned with water and a brush, in certain instances, efflorescence can reappear and gradually diminish over time as salts are leached out...
Bleeding in Fresh Concrete01:22

Bleeding in Fresh Concrete

Bleeding in fresh concrete occurs when water from the mix rises to the surface. This happens because the mix's solid components fail to retain all the water as they settle, leading to separation where water collects at the top. The severity of bleeding can be measured by assessing the total settlement or by noting the decrease in height per unit height of concrete.
Bleeding can cause several issues in the concrete structure. Sometimes, the rising water gets trapped beneath large aggregate...
Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Summary

Mitral valve prolapse is common, usually benign, but can cause severe complications. Echocardiography is key for diagnosis, risk stratification, and guiding surgical repair for symptomatic cases.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Valvular Heart Disease
  • Echocardiography

Background:

  • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a frequent valvular anomaly.
  • It is the leading cause of severe non-ischemic mitral regurgitation in the USA.
  • While prognosis is generally excellent, a small percentage face severe complications like endocarditis or sudden cardiac death.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a comprehensive review of mitral valve prolapse.
  • To examine normal mitral anatomy, clinical/echocardiographic features, pathophysiology, and genetics.
  • To discuss contemporary management strategies for both asymptomatic and symptomatic prolapse, focusing on surgical repair.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review and synthesis of current knowledge on mitral valve prolapse.

  • Analysis of diagnostic criteria and risk stratification methods.
  • Evaluation of surgical techniques and timing for mitral valve repair.
  • Main Results:

    • Echocardiography is the gold standard for diagnosing mitral valve prolapse.
    • Specific clinical and echocardiographic features can identify high-risk patients.
    • Mitral valve repair is the preferred treatment for symptomatic prolapse.

    Conclusions:

    • Diagnosis and risk assessment for mitral valve prolapse are best achieved through echocardiography.
    • Early identification of high-risk individuals is crucial for preventing serious complications.
    • Surgical repair offers the optimal treatment for symptomatic mitral valve prolapse.
