Area of Science:

  • Surgical Education
  • Medical Training Assessment

Background:

  • Objective measures for surgical skill and cognition are emerging.
  • Surgeons' perceptions of current training and assessment methods are crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate surgeons' and basic surgical trainees' (BSTs) beliefs regarding a skills-based examination.
  • To assess current standards, perceived benefits, and training needs in basic surgical skills.

Main Methods:

  • A standardized anonymous questionnaire study was distributed to 300 pairs of consultants and BSTs.
  • Responses were collected using a Likert scale (1-5), with 202 replies received.

Main Results:

  • Only 34% of respondents felt current basic surgical skills training was adequate.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 64% believed a skills examination would raise standards, and 66% deemed it necessary.
  • Poor correlation in self-assessed skill performance was noted between consultants and BSTs.
  • Conclusions:

    • Both consultants and BSTs perceive current basic surgical skills training as insufficient.
    • Introduction of a skills examination is anticipated to enhance skill practice and is viewed favorably.
    • Limited access to dedicated skills facilities presents a barrier to training improvement.
