Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Toxicology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Methamphetamine (MA) is a potent central nervous system stimulant with known associations with cerebrovascular events.
  • While acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes are recognized complications of MA use, delayed sequelae are less understood.

Observation:

  • A 19-year-old woman presented with right occipital infarction 3 months after methamphetamine injection.
  • Clinical presentation included headache, visual field defect (hemianopia), and sensory loss (hypesthesia).
  • Magnetic resonance angiography revealed characteristic "beading" of the right posterior cerebral artery, indicative of vasculitis.

Findings:

  • Cerebral vasculitis was diagnosed, attributed to prior methamphetamine use.
  • The patient experienced gradual symptom improvement without specific intervention.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No alternative causes for stroke or vasculitis were identified.
  • Implications:

    • This case suggests methamphetamine can induce chronic cerebral vasculitis, leading to delayed ischemic stroke.
    • It expands the spectrum of neurological complications associated with methamphetamine abuse.
    • Highlights the importance of considering drug-induced vasculitis in young individuals presenting with stroke.
