Summary

Acute parotitis can spread down the neck. This case report highlights a unique anatomical area below the parotid gland, visualized on CT scans, involved in extraglandular spread of parotitis.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomical imaging
  • Head and neck pathology

Background:

  • Acute parotitis, an inflammation of the salivary glands, can present with severe neck swelling and pain.
  • Extraglandular spread of parotitis is infrequently documented.

Observation:

  • A distinct anatomical region inferior to the parotid gland was identified on CT imaging.
  • This area is delineated by the platysma muscle and the superficial layer of the deep cervical fascia (DCF).

Findings:

  • CT imaging revealed characteristic features of acute parotitis involving this specific anatomical space.
  • The involvement of this area represents a pattern of extraglandular spread.

Implications:

  • Understanding this anatomical pathway is crucial for diagnosing and managing severe parotitis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This finding may refine imaging protocols for parotitis with suspected cervical extension.
