Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Radiology

Background:

  • Linitis plastica of the rectum presents diagnostic challenges due to subtle endoscopic findings, low biopsy yield, and non-specific imaging results.
  • Conventional diagnostic methods like endoscopy, biopsy, barium radiology, and CT scans often fail to detect this uncommon rectal malignancy.

Observation:

  • Rectal endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) offers a novel approach to diagnosing stenosing rectal lesions.
  • This study highlights the effectiveness of EUS in identifying linitis plastica.

Findings:

  • Rectal EUS demonstrates a radical impact on the differential diagnosis of rectal stenosing lesions.
  • EUS enables the diagnosis of linitis plastica even when biopsies yield negative results.

Implications:

  • Endoscopic ultrasonography should be considered for patients with suspected rectal linitis plastica, especially when initial biopsies are inconclusive.
