Summary

This study reports the first case of early-stage bilateral squamous cell carcinoma of the external ear canal in a 72-year-old male. Surgical removal and radiation therapy were performed, with hearing rehabilitation achieved using bone conductive hearing glasses.

Background:

  • Bilateral external ear canal carcinomas are rare.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common skin cancer.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old male presented with early-stage bilateral SCC of the external ear canal.
  • Computed tomography showed no bone destruction, with soft tissue filling both canals.

Findings:

  • Surgical removal via canal-wall down technique and selective neck dissection was performed.
  • Histology confirmed well-differentiated SCC (pT1 G2 N0 M0 R0) without lymph node metastasis.
  • Bilateral radiation therapy (59.4 Gy) resulted in ear canal stenosis.

Implications:

  • Bone conductive hearing glasses effectively rehabilitated hearing post-treatment.
