Venous aneurysms are rare vascular conditions, often affecting younger individuals. These rare venous malformations can cause space-occupying growth and lead to serious complications like pulmonary embolism.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Vascular Medicine
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Venous aneurysms are uncommon vascular abnormalities with limited reported cases.
  • The majority of patients diagnosed with venous aneurysms are under 40 years old.

Observation:

  • Internal jugular vein, portal vein, and great saphenous vein are frequently affected.
  • Aneurysm diameters range from 1 to 16 cm.
  • Space-occupying growth is the most common clinical finding (52%).

Findings:

  • Pulmonary embolism occurs in 6.1% of venous aneurysm cases.
  • Aneurysm rupture is observed in 1.2% of venous aneurysms and 8.9% of transplant vein aneurysms.
  • Rupture can be fatal, with mortality rates of 0.3% and 3.6% respectively.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and management are crucial due to potential life-threatening complications.
  • Understanding the epidemiology and clinical presentation aids in risk stratification.
  • Further research is needed to establish optimal treatment strategies for venous aneurysms.
