The first vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) infection in Cyprus involved Enterococcus faecalis carrying the vanA gene. This VRE strain, identified in an ICU cluster, showed no detectable glycopeptide resistance transfer.

Background:

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) poses a significant global healthcare challenge.
The emergence of VRE in Cyprus represents a new geographical frontier for this resistant pathogen.
Intensive care units (ICUs) are high-risk environments for the transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms.

Observation:

The first documented case of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) infection in Cyprus is reported.
A cluster of VRE isolates was identified within an ICU setting.
All identified VRE isolates were confirmed as Enterococcus faecalis.

Findings:

The VRE isolates belonged to a single clone, indicating clonal spread.
The vanA gene cluster, responsible for glycopeptide resistance, was present in all isolates.

Experimental transfer of glycopeptide resistance to a susceptible Enterococcus faecalis strain was not observed.

Implications:

This finding highlights the need for enhanced surveillance of VRE in Cyprus.
Understanding the clonal relatedness and resistance mechanisms is crucial for infection control.
Further research is needed to elucidate the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of VRE in this region.
