Background:

  • Accurate imaging of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is essential for diagnosing joint disorders.
  • Panoramic radiography is commonly used for initial TMJ assessment, but its accuracy in depicting condyle morphology is debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy of condyle shape representation between multidirectional tomography and three specific panoramic radiography units with TMJ programs.

Main Methods:

  • A dry human skull's TMJ was imaged using multidirectional tomography (gold standard) and three panoramic units (Instrumentarium OP 100, Planmeca PM 2002 CC Proline, Soredex Orthophos DS).
  • Condyle outlines were mathematically described using spline curves.
  • One-sample t-tests compared panoramic images to tomographic data.

  • Significant differences in condyle shape were observed between tomography and all three panoramic units (P < .05).
  • The Planmeca PM 2002 CC Proline showed the least shape distortion (13.4%), followed by the Instrumentarium OP 100 (17.5%), and the Soredex Orthophos DS (24.8%).

Conclusions:

  • Panoramic radiography demonstrates significant condyle shape distortion compared to tomography.
