Summary

Peritoneal fluid in endometriosis contains elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-8 (IL-8) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1). These cytokine levels correlate with endometriosis severity, impacting reproductive health.

Background:

  • The peritoneal fluid (PF) environment surrounding endometriosis implants is immunologically active.
  • PF contains diverse immune cells, notably macrophages, which influence cellular processes via growth factors and cytokines.
  • Cytokines are increasingly recognized for their critical roles in reproduction, from gamete function to post-implantation survival.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and significance of specific pro-inflammatory cytokines in the peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis.
  • To determine if the concentrations of these cytokines are altered in endometriosis and correlate with disease severity.
