Area of Science:

  • Clinical Trials
  • Public Health Interventions
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)-Sodium trial aimed to evaluate the impact of sodium reduction on blood pressure.
  • Effective participant recruitment is crucial for the success and generalizability of clinical trials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze recruitment strategies used by four clinical centers in the DASH-Sodium trial.
  • To identify the most successful recruitment methods and document lessons learned.

Main Methods:

  • Examined recruitment practices across four clinical centers.
  • Categorized recruitment strategies into mass mailing brochures and mass media advertisements.
  • Tracked participant sources: brochures, media, prior participants, word-of-mouth, screening events.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Mass mailing brochures recruited 64% (265) of the 412 randomized participants.
  • Mass media accounted for 15% (62) of participants.
  • Prior study participants, word-of-mouth, and screening events contributed 21% (85) of participants.

Conclusions:

  • Mass mailing brochures proved to be the most successful recruitment method for the DASH-Sodium trial.
  • A threefold increase in brochure distribution was necessary to achieve comparable recruitment success to the initial DASH trial, highlighting evolving recruitment challenges.
