Summary

Increased occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) reduces jaw muscle spindle sensitivity. This suggests peripheral sensory plasticity may allow physiological adaptation to changes in OVD, challenging previous assumptions about OVD regulation.

Background:

  • Jaw-muscle spindles are traditionally considered key regulators of occlusal vertical dimension (OVD).
  • The hypothesis that long-term OVD alterations impact muscle spindle sensory input remains largely unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the functional changes in masseter muscle spindles under conditions of increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD).
  • To challenge the established role of muscle spindles in OVD maintenance by examining their response to altered OVD.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized barbiturate-anesthetized female Wistar rats (n=20), divided into control and iOVD groups.
  • Induced iOVD by applying a 2.0-mm composite resin build-up to the maxillary molars in the experimental group.
