Superficial leiomyosarcoma, a rare smooth muscle tumor, is exceptionally uncommon in the foot. This study reviews 12 foot and ankle cases, including a unique heel ulcer presentation.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Leiomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue neoplasm originating from smooth muscle cells.
  • Superficial leiomyosarcomas account for a small percentage of malignant soft tissue tumors and sarcomas.
  • Occurrence in the foot and ankle is exceedingly rare.

Observation:

  • A literature review identified only 12 previously reported cases of leiomyosarcoma in the foot and ankle from 1936 to the present.
  • The study will present incidence, demographics, clinical features, histopathology, prognosis, and treatment of this rare entity.
  • A unique case of leiomyosarcoma complicating a recalcitrant heel ulcer is detailed.

Findings:

  • Leiomyosarcoma of the skin and subcutaneous tissue is characterized by spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The incidence of superficial leiomyosarcomas ranges from 2.3% to 5.3% of malignant soft tissue tumors.
  • Foot and ankle leiomyosarcomas represent a highly unusual subset of these rare tumors.
  • Implications:

    • Understanding the rarity and specific characteristics of foot and ankle leiomyosarcomas is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
    • This review provides a comprehensive overview to aid clinicians in recognizing and managing this unusual presentation.
    • The case history highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in persistent, non-healing wounds.
