Thyroid dysfunction is uncommon in hereditary haemochromatosis (HH), despite iron deposition in the thyroid. This study found a low prevalence of hypothyroidism in 154 HH patients.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Genetics
  • Iron Metabolism

Background:

  • Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) involves significant iron accumulation in the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid dysfunction is infrequently reported in HH patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of thyroid disorders in a large cohort of hereditary haemochromatosis patients.

Main Methods:

  • Endocrine assessments were performed, including thyroid function tests and antibody studies.
  • 154 consecutive patients with hereditary haemochromatosis were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • One case of primary hypothyroidism (0.6% prevalence) and two cases of subclinical hypothyroidism (1.3% prevalence) were identified.
  • Two additional cases of iatrogenic hypothyroidism were noted.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No instances of hyperthyroidism were observed.
  • Conclusions:

    • Thyroid dysfunction is an infrequent complication in individuals with hereditary haemochromatosis.
