Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Liposarcomas represent a common category of soft tissue sarcomas in adult populations.
  • These tumors are notably characterized by their potential for significant enlargement.

Observation:

  • A case involving an exceptionally large dedifferentiated liposarcoma, weighing 18 kg, is presented.
  • The tumor, despite being encapsulated and amenable to en bloc resection, was associated with a poor patient outcome.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced a relapse of the dedifferentiated liposarcoma nine months post-surgery.
  • Tragically, the patient succumbed to the disease one year after the operative intervention.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the aggressive nature of large dedifferentiated liposarcomas, even when surgically resectable.
