Summary

Stentless mitral valve replacement shows promising early results, maintaining good valve function and patient ejection fraction. Long-term durability of the stentless mitral valve (SMV) requires further investigation.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Medical Device Technology

Background:

  • Clinical evaluation of stentless mitral valve (SMV) replacement.
  • Focus on the functional outcomes of SMV implantation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical experience and functional performance of stentless mitral valves.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of SMV replacement in patients with various mitral valve pathologies.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 52 patients undergoing SMV replacement (Quattro) for mitral stenosis, incompetence, or mixed lesions.
  • Patients were assessed preoperatively and during follow-up (mean 37.3 months) via echocardiography.
  • Surgical approaches included conventional sternotomy and anterolateral minithoracotomy; 20 patients received concurrent ablation therapy.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Low perioperative mortality (1.9%) and reoperation rate (11.5%).
  • Good SMV function observed, with favorable transmitral blood flow velocity and pressure gradients.
  • Well-preserved ejection fraction postoperatively and at late follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Stentless mitral valve implantation demonstrates promising clinical outcomes and functional performance.
  • Preservation of annuloventricular continuity appears advantageous.
  • Long-term durability of SMV requires further long-term studies.
