    Summary

    This study describes a unique case of adult-onset centronuclear myopathy featuring significant lower limb muscle hypertrophy. This presentation may represent a previously unreported variant of this rare neuromuscular disorder.

    Background:

    • Centronuclear myopathy (CNM) is a group of rare inherited muscle disorders characterized by specific abnormalities in muscle cell nuclei.
    • Adult-onset forms of CNM are less common than childhood-onset types.

    Observation:

    • A case of centronuclear myopathy presenting in adulthood was observed in a black South African male.
    • The patient exhibited striking hypertrophy, or enlargement, of the lower limb muscles.

    Findings:

    • Detailed light microscopic, histochemical, and ultrastructural analyses were performed on muscle tissue.
    • The co-occurrence of muscle hypertrophy with centronuclear myopathy is a novel finding, not previously documented in medical literature.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests a potential new variant of centronuclear myopathy.
