Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Human Locomotion
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Coupled oscillator models are used to understand locomotion.
  • Previous models focused on stationary interlimb coordination.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine predictions from a coupled oscillator model in intralimb coordination.
  • To investigate head and torso coordination during walking and running.

Main Methods:

  • Measured head linear and angular accelerations during treadmill locomotion.
  • Analyzed head and torso coordination using relative phase measures.
  • Compared measures between walking and running gaits.

Main Results:

  • Head linear acceleration increased during running compared to walking.
  • Head pitch/torso pitch relative phase decreased during running compared to walking.
  • No significant differences were found for other measured variables.

Conclusions:

  • Head and torso coordination dynamics differ between walking and running.
  • Findings provide insights into locomotor coordination mechanisms.
  • Model predictions offer a framework for understanding intralimb coordination.
