Summary
Idiopathic submandibular sialocele, a neck mass, can recur after initial treatment. Complete excision of the sialocele and submandibular gland ensures no recurrence in young males.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Submandibular sialocele is a rare condition characterized by saliva accumulation.
- Idiopathic cases lack identifiable causes like trauma or prior salivary gland disease.
Observation:
- Three young male patients presented with soft, compressible neck masses.
- Computed tomography (CT) revealed homogenous lesions with enhancing rims, insinuating into surrounding tissues.
Findings:
- Initial sialocele excision without gland removal led to recurrence in one patient.
- Complete excision of both the sialocele and submandibular gland resulted in no recurrence in all three patients.
Implications:
- Submandibular gland excision may be necessary for definitive treatment of idiopathic sialoceles.
- This approach can prevent recurrence and improve patient outcomes.
