Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Keratoacanthomas are common skin tumors, but multiple eruptive keratoacanthomas are rare.
  • This condition presents as a sudden eruption of numerous lesions, often on sun-exposed areas.

Observation:

  • An 89-year-old male presented with a sudden onset of multiple erythematous papules and nodules on his lower extremities.
  • Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of keratoacanthoma.

Findings:

  • Topical imiquimod cream, applied for 3 months, was ineffective in resolving the keratoacanthomas.
  • The case underscores the potential for treatment resistance in multiple eruptive keratoacanthomas.

Implications:

  • This case necessitates a review of various clinical subtypes, histological features, and treatment options for multiple eruptive keratoacanthomas.
  • Further research into effective treatment modalities for this rare condition is warranted.
