Summary

This study shows that people can sense subtle energy fields, performing better than chance on biofield awareness tasks. Individual differences in self-awareness and belief influence this ability.

Area of Science:

  • Integrative medicine
  • Consciousness studies
  • Biofield research

Background:

  • Biofield awareness tasks explore bioelectromagnetic and consciousness-related mechanisms.
  • Individual differences in integrative biofield awareness (IBA) are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a battery of biofield awareness tasks.
  • To examine individual differences in integrative biofield awareness (IBA).

Main Methods:

  • Six biofield awareness tasks were developed, involving proximity, staring, and intention.
  • 165 psychology students completed 60 trials, self-awareness assessments, and questionnaires.
  • Participants' estimates of performance, spiritual beliefs, and extrasensory perception (ESP) experiences were recorded.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Overall IBA accuracy was 57.7%, significantly above the 50% chance level.
  • All six tasks individually showed significant results.
  • Higher self-reported biofield awareness, spiritual beliefs, and ESP experiences correlated with higher IBA performance.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support energy healers' claims about biofield awareness modulation.
  • Biofield awareness can be influenced by bioelectromagnetic factors and conscious intent.
  • Individual differences in biofield awareness are linked to self-awareness and sensitivity.
