Summary

Rigid bronchoscopy caused bacterial translocation (BT) in rats, likely due to hypoxemia. This suggests low oxygen levels, not the procedure itself, may trigger BT from the gut.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if bronchoscopy itself or associated hypoxemia triggers BT.
  • Investigate the role of oxygen saturation during bronchoscopy in bacterial translocation.

Main Methods:

  • 24 rats were divided into control, rigid bronchoscopy, and bronchoscopy with mechanical ventilation groups.
  • Oxygen saturation (SaO2) was monitored during the procedure.
  • Blood and tissue cultures (mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, spleen) were analyzed 24 hours post-bronchoscopy.
