A new web-based system enables interactive display and manipulation of electronic patient records (EPR) for collaborative medical applications. This technology facilitates remote diagnosis and teleconsultation, improving patient care.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Web Technologies
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Electronic Patient Records (EPR) are crucial for modern healthcare.
  • Collaborative medical applications require efficient and interactive data sharing.
  • Existing systems may lack the flexibility for real-time, remote interaction with diverse medical data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a web-based system for interactive display and manipulation of EPR.
  • To enable collaborative medical applications over intranets and the internet.
  • To facilitate teleconsultation and tele-diagnosis using EPR data.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a system with C/S architecture for EPR acquisition/authoring and Web B/S architecture for data delivery.
  • Integrated multi-media display and remote control modules into a web viewer.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Utilized DICOM standards for an open architecture.
  • Main Results:

    • Successfully deployed the system for teleconsultation of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) patients.
    • Physicians and experts interacted with EPR objects for precise diagnosis.
    • Demonstrated interactive manipulation and navigation of DICOM images and reports.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed system provides a novel approach for managing image-based EPR.
    • Web technology and DICOM standards enable an open architecture for collaborative medical applications.
    • The system is suitable for various applications including tele-diagnosis, teleconsultation, and distant learning.
