Intestinal tuberculosis, often overlooked, can cause chronic abdominal pain, especially in immunocompromised individuals. This study highlights the need to consider this diagnosis in patients with altered immunity presenting with persistent abdominal pain.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) is increasingly diagnosed globally, even in developed nations.
  • ITB is frequently overlooked as a cause of chronic abdominal pain.
  • Altered immunological status is a significant risk factor for ITB.

Observation:

  • Four patients with ITB requiring surgical intervention were analyzed.
  • All patients presented with chronic abdominal pain and acute complications necessitating surgery.
  • Three patients had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and one had chronic renal failure.

Findings:

  • ITB can manifest as chronic abdominal pain, often with acute surgical complications.
  • Patients with compromised immune systems, such as those with AIDS or chronic renal failure, are at higher risk.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical treatment was required for acute complications arising from ITB.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider ITB in the differential diagnosis of chronic abdominal pain, particularly in immunocompromised patients.
    • Early recognition and diagnosis of ITB can prevent severe complications.
    • This underscores the importance of considering infectious etiologies in patients with unexplained chronic abdominal pain and altered immunity.
