Summary

The Kodak Ektachem system over-estimates delta bilirubin in samples with unconjugated bilirubin. For conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia, the automated and manual methods agree, but manual confirmation is recommended for unconjugated cases.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Laboratory Medicine

Background:

  • Delta bilirubin is a modified form of bilirubin.
  • Accurate measurement of delta bilirubin is crucial for diagnosing and managing hyperbilirubinemia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare delta bilirubin measurements between the automated Kodak Ektachem system and a manual assay.
  • To evaluate the accuracy of the Ektachem system for different types of hyperbilirubinemia.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 40 serum samples with varying diagnoses.
  • Comparison of automated Ektachem system estimates with manual method measurements.
  • Regression analysis to assess correlation and agreement.

Main Results:

  • Regression analysis showed a slope of 0.832, intercept of 9.9, and r-value of 0.724.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The Ektachem system over-estimated delta bilirubin in samples with predominantly unconjugated bilirubin.
  • Close agreement was observed between the Ektachem system and manual method for samples with conjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
  • Conclusions:

    • The Kodak Ektachem system's delta bilirubin estimates require confirmation by manual assay in cases of predominantly unconjugated bilirubin.
    • The automated system's use is warranted given it's the only automated method available for delta bilirubin estimation.
