Summary
Routine pleural fluid cultures for bacteria, mycobacteria, and fungi have a low diagnostic yield. Selective ordering of microbiologic testing for pleural effusions is recommended based on these findings.

Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the diagnostic yield of routine microbiologic cultures and smears of pleural fluid specimens.
