Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiology
  • Congenital Anomalies

Background:

  • Intrathoracic kidney is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • It can present as a posterior mediastinal mass.
  • Accurate diagnosis is essential to prevent unnecessary interventions.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old male presented with 2 years of nonspecific chest pain.
  • Initial chest radiograph revealed a left posterior mediastinal mass.
  • The patient had no history of significant chest trauma.

Findings:

  • Chest computed tomography (CT) confirmed the mass as a congenital intrathoracic kidney.
  • CT is an efficient tool for diagnosing intrathoracic kidney.
  • This diagnosis obviates the need for further clinical studies or surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • Intrathoracic kidney should be considered in the differential diagnosis of posterior mediastinal masses.
  • Utilizing chest CT can lead to timely and accurate diagnosis.
  • Early confirmation prevents unnecessary patient management and surgical procedures.
