Summary

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not protect against heart disease and may increase cardiovascular risk. Current evidence suggests HRT should not be recommended for cardioprotection in postmenopausal women.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Women's Health

Background:

  • Estrogen's role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction in premenopausal women was previously hypothesized.
  • Observational studies suggested hormone replacement therapy (HRT) might be cardioprotective for postmenopausal women.
  • HRT influences various cardiovascular parameters, with complex effects on overall cardiovascular risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the cardioprotective effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women.
  • To assess the impact of HRT on cardiovascular risk based on recent evidence.

Main Methods:

  • Review of observational studies on HRT and cardiovascular disease.
  • Analysis of recent randomized, placebo-controlled trials investigating HRT's cardiovascular effects.

Main Results:

  • Randomized trials indicate HRT does not provide cardioprotection.
  • HRT has been shown to increase cardiovascular risk in the short term.
  • Conflicting effects of HRT on cardiovascular parameters complicate risk prediction.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence does not support the use of HRT for cardioprotection in postmenopausal women.
  • HRT should not be recommended with the expectation of preventing coronary heart disease.
