Summary

Hypertension, particularly high diastolic blood pressure, is linked to earlier onset and more severe benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Long-term hypertension may worsen BPH progression and clinical outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Cardiology
  • Pathology

Context:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Hypertension is a prevalent comorbidity in the general population.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the relationship between primary hypertension and the occurrence and progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Summary:

  • A study of 423 BPH patients found that 30.3% had hypertension.
  • Patients with hypertension experienced earlier BPH onset and progression, with higher rates of hematuria and urinary retention.
  • Prostatic volume was positively correlated with the duration of hypertension.

Impact:

  • Findings suggest hypertension, especially high diastolic blood pressure, may accelerate BPH development and worsen its clinical presentation.
