This study isolated five clerodane diterpenoids and two flavone compounds from Pulicaria wightiana. The antibacterial activity of the diterpenoids was investigated.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Medicinal Chemistry
Background:
- Pulicaria wightiana is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
- Natural products research focuses on isolating bioactive compounds from plants.
- Diterpenoids and flavonoids are classes of natural compounds with diverse biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Pulicaria wightiana.
- To investigate the antibacterial potential of the isolated clerodane diterpenoids.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation involving isolation techniques.
- Structure elucidation using spectroscopic methods, primarily 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Assessment of antibacterial activity of isolated diterpenoids.
Main Results:
- Five clerodane diterpenoids were successfully isolated.
- Two additional compounds, 3'5,6-trihydroxy-3,4',7-trimethoxyflavone and 2-methyl-5-hydroxy-chroman-4-one, were identified.
- The structures and stereochemistry of all isolated compounds were determined through comprehensive spectral analysis.
- The antibacterial activity of the isolated diterpenoids was evaluated.
- The identified flavone and chromanone derivatives were reported for the first time in this plant species.
Conclusions:
- The aerial parts of Pulicaria wightiana are a source of diverse clerodane diterpenoids and other secondary metabolites.
- The isolated compounds, particularly the diterpenoids, warrant further investigation for their therapeutic potential, including antibacterial applications.
