[Regulation of vitamin D biosynthesis by calcium]
1Department of Foods and Human Nutrition, Faculty of Human Life Sciences Notre Dame Seishin University.
Abstract:
Vitamin D is a secosteroid that is made in the skin by the action of sunlight. Vitamin D is biologically insert and must undergo two successive hydroxylations in the liver and kidney to become the biologically active vitamin D [1alpha,25 (OH)(2)D]. Recently it was appreciated that 1alpha,25 (OH)(2)D not only regulates calcium but also is capable of inhibiting the proliferation and inducing terminal differentiation of variety of cells. The renal production of 1alpha,25 (OH)(2)D is tightly regulated by serum calcium levels through the action of parathyroid hormone.

Role of Skin in Vitamin D Synthesis
The solar UV B rays (290-315 nm) are absorbed by the skin, and 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin D3) photolyzes it to previtamin D3, which undergoes a rapid transformation to vitamin D3(cholecalciferol).

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is involved in the process of bone remodeling. Retinoic acid, the active metabolite of Vitamin A, has nuclear receptors in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are involved in bone remodeling.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 acts as a cofactor during the formation of osteoblast-related proteins, such as osteocalcin. Vitamin B12 plays a role...
Hormones and Bone Tissue
Hormones That Influence Osteoblasts and/or Maintain the Matrix
Several hormones are necessary for controlling bone growth and maintaining the bone matrix. The pituitary gland secretes growth hormone (GH), which, as its name implies, controls bone growth. This happens in several ways: first, it triggers chondrocyte...
Calmodulin-dependent Signaling
The Ca2+-CaM complex does not have enzymatic activity by itself. Instead, the complex binds downstream target proteins, including membrane proteins or enzymes,...
Synthesis and Functions of Calcitonin
