After the identification of 1alpha,25- (OH) (2)D(3) as the active vitamin D(3), many active analogues have been created. And then, the evidence that the phamacologically high level of plasma 1alpha,25- (OH)(2)D(3) effectively suppress the PTH secretion was demonstrated. So, we now have variety of strategies in the treatment against the secondary hyperparathyroidism. The comparative efficacy of the oral or intravenous administration of these analogues was reviewed in this issue.

Role of Skin in Vitamin D Synthesis
The solar UV B rays (290-315 nm) are absorbed by the skin, and 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin D3) photolyzes it to previtamin D3, which undergoes a rapid transformation to vitamin D3(cholecalciferol).
