Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Public Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Replication of previous research on appointment reminders in orthodontics.
  • Testing hypotheses on reminder effectiveness and form irrelevance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retest hypotheses regarding the efficacy of appointment reminders in reducing failed orthodontic appointments.
  • To determine if the communication method of the reminder influences its effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial conducted in a Dutch orthodontic clinic.
  • Four groups: telephone, mail, short message service (SMS) reminders, and a control group.
  • Follow-up interviews to assess patient preferences and perceptions of reminders.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Reminders did not significantly reduce failed attendance rates.
  • No significant differences in attendance rates were observed between the reminder groups and the control group.
  • Patients generally preferred mail reminders, followed by telephone and SMS, though a notable percentage found them a waste of resources.

Conclusions:

  • The hypothesis that reminders prevent failed appointments was not supported by this study.
  • Highlights the importance of replication studies for validating research findings.
  • Emphasizes cautious interpretation and generalization of research results pending further replication.
