Area of Science:

  • Adolescent Health
  • Exercise Science
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Physical activity (PA) self-definition influences participation in adults.
  • Understanding youth PA self-definition is crucial for interventions against declining activity levels.
  • PA self-definition, frequency, and enjoyment are key factors in adolescent engagement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore correlates of PA self-definition in adolescents.
  • To assess differences in PA self-definition across developmental stages and ethnicities.
  • To examine PA self-definition in relation to gender and pubertal development.

Main Methods:

  • A 3 (developmental stage) x 2 (gender) design was employed.
  • 168 adolescents (ages 9-17) from diverse ethnic backgrounds participated.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data included PA self-definition, physical fitness (peak VO2), and developmental stage.
  • Main Results:

    • Current PA self-definition positively correlated with physical fitness (peak VO2) and future PA self-definition.
    • Males exhibited higher current and future PA self-definitions compared to females.
    • Significant differences in PA self-definition were observed across genders.

    Conclusions:

    • Boys possess stronger current and future PA self-definitions than girls, posing a challenge for intervention.
    • Strategies to enhance girls' PA self-definition are vital for promoting sustained PA participation.
    • Developing a robust PA self-definition in youth is linked to increased adult PA levels.
