Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary appendiceal lymphoma is a rare condition.
  • Acute perforated appendicitis is a common surgical emergency.

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old female presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain.
  • Clinical diagnosis was acute appendicitis, leading to surgical intervention.
  • The resected appendix was gangrenous and perforated.

Findings:

  • Light microscopy revealed transmural infiltration by diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
  • Angioinvasion and tumor necrosis were observed, consistent with perforated acute suppurative appendicitis.
  • This represents one of only four documented cases of primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the appendix.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the rare presentation of appendiceal lymphoma as acute appendicitis.
  • Emphasizes the importance of histopathological examination for definitive diagnosis.
  • Contributes to the limited literature on primary appendiceal lymphoma, aiding future research and clinical awareness.
