Summary

Interferon beta-1b treatment did not increase autoantibody formation in patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. This study found no evidence that interferon beta (IFNbeta) induces autoimmunity in MS patients.

Background:

  • Limited data exist on interferon beta (IFNbeta) potentially inducing or worsening autoimmune diseases.
  • Existing studies offer contradictory findings and fail to distinguish between autoimmune dysfunction common in multiple sclerosis (MS) and adverse drug reactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effect of IFNbeta-1b on markers of autoimmunity, including hepatic and thyroid autoantibodies.
  • Utilized data from a European placebo-controlled trial in patients with secondary progressive MS (SPMS).

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed serum samples from 355 patients on IFNbeta-1b and 353 on placebo over 24 months.
  • Assessed autoantibodies (AAbs) including ANA, AMA, SMA, LKM, TPO, and TG.
  • Correlated AAb status with laboratory and clinical deviations.
