Summary

Sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) is suspected to be immunomediated in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. Positive anticochlear antibodies correlate with more severe hearing loss and higher disease activity in UC.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Immunology
  • Gastroenterology

Context:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) can occur in patients with autoimmune conditions.
  • The link between UC and SHL requires further investigation.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the potential role of immunomediation in SHL among UC patients.
  • To assess hearing loss, disease activity, inflammation markers, and anticochlear antibodies in UC patients.

Summary:

  • This study examined 49 UC patients, assessing hearing loss, disease activity, inflammation markers, and anticochlear antibodies via Western-blot (WB).
  • SHL was detected in 59.1% of patients, with 48.9% testing positive for anticochlear antibodies (68-70 kDa blots).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Positive WB results correlated with more severe deafness, higher UC disease activity, and elevated inflammatory markers like erythrosedimentation rate.
  • Impact:

    • Findings suggest a potential autoimmune or immunomediated mechanism underlying SHL in UC patients.
    • Highlights the importance of audiological screening in UC patients.
    • May inform future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for SHL in inflammatory bowel disease.
