Background:

  • Intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion (IPHP) is a common oncologic treatment.
  • Hyperthermia may decrease interstitial pressure and alter intestinal barrier function and flora.
  • These alterations could potentially lead to bacterial translocation (BT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of IPHP in bacterial translocation (BT).
  • To assess the impact of IPHP on cecal bacterial population levels (CBPL).

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-one rats were divided into IPHP (43°C) and normothermic control (37°C) groups.
  • Samples of mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and cecal aspirates were collected at 1, 3, and 7 days.
  • Bacterial presence, BT, and cecal bacterial population levels (CFU) were quantified.

Main Results:

  • No BT was detected in the immediate post-IPHP group (1st day) or any control groups.
  • Significant BT was observed in the IPHP group at 3 and 7 days (83.3% and 66.6%, respectively).
  • A positive correlation was found between cecal bacterial population levels (CBPL) and BT.

Conclusions:

  • IPHP induces significant bacterial translocation (BT) in a time-dependent manner.
  • This BT may contribute to septic complications observed after IPHP treatments.
  • Further studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms linking IPHP and BT pathophysiology.
