Summary

This study examines repeat suicide attempts, finding prescription drug overdoses are common and methods are often repeated. Young individuals are more prone to repeat attempts, particularly with physical methods and alcohol use.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Repeated suicide attempts represent a significant public health concern.
  • Limited research exists on the characteristics and patterns of individuals with multiple suicide attempts.
  • Understanding these patterns is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics of patients with repeated suicide attempts.
  • To identify trends in methods used for suicide attempts, including prescription drug overdoses.
  • To explore demographic factors and substance use associated with repeat attempts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patient data for individuals with multiple suicide attempts.
  • Categorization of suicide attempt methods (e.g., physical vs. overdose).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical examination of demographic variables and substance use (e.g., alcohol).
  • Main Results:

    • Prescription drug overdose was the predominant method in suicide attempts.
    • Physician intervention in preventing prescribed medication abuse in patients with a history of overdose attempts was not evident.
    • A majority of repeat attempts were observed in young individuals.
    • Repeat attempts often involved the same chosen method (physical or overdose).
    • Alcohol use was notably high among younger individuals using physical methods for repeat attempts.

    Conclusions:

    • Repeated suicide attempts, particularly those involving prescription drug overdoses, require further investigation and targeted interventions.
    • The tendency to repeat suicide attempt methods highlights the need for tailored prevention strategies.
    • Identifying high-risk groups, such as young people with alcohol use and a history of physical method attempts, is key for effective public health strategies.
