  • Pneumoperitoneum in laparoscopy causes physiological changes, potentially affecting kidney redox status.
  • The impact of prolonged pneumoperitoneum on oxidative stress compared to open surgery is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the levels of oxidative stress between patients undergoing urologic laparoscopic surgery and open surgery.
  • To investigate the association between pneumoperitoneum and oxidative stress markers.

Main Methods:

  • Urine samples collected from 10 laparoscopic and 10 open surgery patients preoperatively and at 6, 18 hours postoperatively.
  • Measured urinary concentrations of 8-iso-prostaglandin F2a, a marker of oxidative stress.

    • Urinary 8-iso-prostaglandin F2a levels normalize within 18 hours postoperatively, regardless of surgical approach.
    • Prolonged operative time in laparoscopic surgery did not appear to influence oxidative stress levels.
