Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Behçet's disease is a rare multisystem inflammatory disorder.
  • Peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement is an uncommon manifestation.

Observation:

  • A 47-year-old male with a 6-year history of Behçet's disease presented with a 2-year history of neurological symptoms.
  • Symptoms included limb paresthesia, weakness, diarrhea, and erectile dysfunction.
  • Electromyography and nerve biopsy confirmed axonal sensorimotor neuropathy.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited both sensorimotor and autonomic peripheral neuropathy.
  • Standard tests ruled out other common causes and entero-Behçet.
  • Treatment with prednisone, cyclophosphamide, and carbamazepine improved paresthesia.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the rare association of sensorimotor and autonomic neuropathy in Behçet's disease.
  • The underlying mechanism of neuropathy in Behçet's disease remains unclear, possibly involving vasculitis.
  • Further research is needed to understand and manage PNS complications in Behçet's disease.
