Most men with erectile dysfunction (ED) are satisfied with pharmacologic erections via self-injection, yet many discontinue treatment. Satisfaction with erections does not fully explain the high dropout rate in ED programs.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Sexual Medicine

Background:

  • Male erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition affecting many men.
  • Pharmacologic erection programs, particularly intracorporeal injections, offer a treatment option for ED.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess patient satisfaction with intracorporeal injections for erectile dysfunction.
  • To investigate reasons for high dropout rates in pharmacologic erection programs.

Main Methods:

  • A detailed questionnaire was sent to 172 patients undergoing pharmacologic erection therapy.
  • Patient satisfaction with self-injection using vasoactive drugs and likelihood to recommend were assessed.

Main Results:

  • 67% of patients responded to the questionnaire.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 85% reported improved sex life, and 88% would recommend penile self-injection.
  • Despite high satisfaction, 49% of respondents had discontinued self-injections.
  • Conclusions:

    • The majority of patients achieve satisfactory erections and sexual satisfaction with intracorporeal injections.
    • High dropout rates may stem from factors unrelated to erection quality or sexual satisfaction.
